Lesson: Teacher will continue to show children the pictures they drew since Tuesday to review the effects of the sun on living things and the seasons. Then I will prompt them to remember that the Sun is a Big Star. I”ll remind them how the Earth rotates around the sunand ask them what season results when the sunlight does not hit the Earth directly but at an angle (show them a picture from web) (WINTER) https://youtu.be/T6SSOoEMwAA
I’ll provide the scenario of the snow melting that leads to Spring and show them the picture we drew Monday to show how this affects people, animals, and plants. Then I’ll tell them to look for those things when we read: When Spring Comes by Kevin Henkes https://youtu.be/Q_kNU3XpMew
When done, I’ll explain Summer arrives and discuss the changes based on our pictures from prior instruction. Finally, I'll introduce the new season, Fall/Autumn. I will explain how the weather gets cooler, because the Sun doesn't hit the Earth directly, and the effect of it on living things. We will read a nonfiction book on what happens https://youtu.be/iLBKZwgQDNY and upon completion we will draw a picture of what we learned about Fall/Autumn. What is best is that in the Fall, we will return to school as first graders!
When Spring Comes by Kevin Henkes https://youtu.be/Q_kNU3XpMew
Lesson: Teacher will continue to show children the pictures they drew on Tuesday to review the effects of the sun on living things. Then I will prompt them to remember that the Sun is a Big Star. I”ll remind them how the Earth rotates around the sun (video: https://youtu.be/vDgUmTq4a2Q )and ask them what season results when the sunlight hits the Earth directly (SUMMER) when days of sunlight are longer and nights shorter and indirectly (WINTER) when the temperature feels cool/cold, day time is shorter, and nights are longer (gets dark early). I’ll read Froggy Gets Dressed by Jonathan London to understand how certain animals, like frogs, hibernate because they do not like the cold and how the winter affects what clothes we wear and activities.
But what happens when the sun hits the Earth more evenly (model using part of video 1:50-2:18: https://youtu.be/T6SSOoEMwAA ) )? I’ll use the picture of Winter kids made to get some responses. I’ll tell them this season of change is called Spring and have them repeat after me. Then we will confirm what happens using a video:https://youtu.be/ZEb1GsqxhZcFinally we will draw a picture of what we learned about Spring.

Lesson: Teacher will continue to show children the pictures they drew on Tuesday to review the effects of the sun on living things. Then I will prompt them to remember that the Sun is a Big Star. I”ll remind them how the Earth rotates around the sun and ask them what season results when the sunlight hits the Earth directly (SUMMER)- I’ll use a flashlight to show. I’ll ask: What do you think would happen when the Earth rotates and the sunlight hits the Earth at an angle (show with flashlight). I’ll guide children to understand that because light hits the Earth indirectly, the temperature feels cool/cold, day time is shorter, and nights are longer (gets dark early). We call this season WINTER. Because in California we don’t get snow, (only high in mountains), I'll make sure they understand we only get cold temperatures and sometimes rain.
Show Video of Winter- how human’s respond to it- by DreamEnglish : https://youtu.be/c7s-Twed45g
Then show video by Mr. Kipley on how it affects animals/people/and plants: https://youtu.be/X2C5fDIVAaU

Lesson: Teacher will tell children that today we will review how to measure objects. I will solicit children to remind me of how we can measure them(length, height, weight, capacity) using vocabulary cards as prompts as needed. Then I’ll review the vocabulary on page 527 and have the children identify the word that matches the pictures and place either an X or circle as instructed.
Page 528, 529, 530- Then we will do the pages as instructed and I will ask one child (independently) to compare the objects using the appropriate vocabulary (short/long/ tall/ heavy/light/holds more/holds less/equal) and circle, X, or underline as instructed in each page.
Page 531-A child will be asked to name an object that is long and another child will name something shorter for us to draw below. Then a child will name a tall object and another child will name a shorter object than the one named to draw.

Lesson: Teacher will tell children that today we will learn about capacity: capacity is how much an object can hold inside and then I”ll show the children the two sandboxes on page 521. He will pose a problem: Kids love to play in sandboxes, which one will hold more kids? WHY? I will use pennies to represent children (explain that they are the same size and must touch each other). I will model how to describe using the words - holds more and holds less. Last I will circle the item that holds less.
Page 522- Example 1: I will show them the objects pictured. I will compare their capacity by putting either cubes/pennies/LifeSavers/or sugar cubes Then we will do example 2 & 3 in the same manner. Children will X the objects that hold less, circle the ones that contain more and underline if the hold the same amount.
Pages-523, 524, 525,526-. I will ask one child (independently) to compare the objects using the appropriate vocabulary (holds more/holds less/equal) and circle, X, or underline as instructed in each page.

Opening: Children will look at 2 water containers that are different in size. The teacher will get them to focus on how they are different. Depending on how he lays them down (length) or stands them up (height), he will get children to use the appropriate vocabulary words learned so far (longer, shorter, tall, short). I will use hand gestures to help them review.
GOAL: Children will be introduced to measurable attributes of objects such as length, weight, height, capacity.(K.MD.1) They will compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common to see who has more or less of that attribute.(K.MD.2)

Lesson: Teacher will introduce the concept of weight by now showing the children another container full of water (jug). He will remind them that these are all different but they are used to hold water. He will examine contents and explain that the water inside and size of container affects how much it weighs. He will then target the heaviest and the lightest. (the one in the middle will be described as heavier than___ but lighter than___).
Then they will be directed to page 509 and I will have them help me determine where to draw the appropriate bottles on a teeter-totter (which will serve as a scale). I will also use my hands as a human scale.
Page 510- I will show Houghton Mifflin video to do example #1. Together we will do #2-3. Pages-511, 512, 513, 514 I will ask one child (independently) to tell me which object is heavier and circle it and X the lightest.
We will close with the video:https://youtu.be/-EG_YSy4NkM

Lesson: Teacher will show the length card and remind them it tells you how long things (use hand gestures like stretching a rubber band). Have them turn to page 501. I will have them look at the xylophone and describe it. I will think aloud and use pennies (which are as big as the connecting cubes in the book) to compare and make a SMART guess about how many pennies long is the longer one. I will write down my guess and then check it...explain that it’s ok to be wrong in our guess that’s why we check it. I will model page 502 in the same manner and do it (together).
Pages 503,504,505,506- I will ask a child (indeprendent) to tell me what object is longer. Then direct their attention to the shorter one and its length in cubes (pennies). I will ask them to make a smart guess based on the clue they’ve been given on how long the longer one is and write it down. Finally they will use pennies to check if they’re right.
